Define commercial use in measurable terms

“Commercial grade” is not a standard duty classification across every category. Record the actual work:

  • units, square metres, customers or cycles per hour and per day
  • continuous run time and required cooling or rest periods
  • peak load rather than average load
  • indoor, outdoor, wet, dusty, corrosive or food environment
  • number and training level of operators
  • required cleaning and turnaround time
  • consequence and cost when the product is unavailable

Ask whether the manufacturer states a duty cycle, service interval, rated throughput, maximum load, operating temperature, ingress rating or commercial-use warranty. A domestic product may complete an occasional business task but still be unsuitable for repeated daily operation or excluded from the written warranty. Australian Consumer Law rights cannot be removed by a warranty label, but the product must still be reasonably selected and used for the disclosed purpose.

Workplace plant and risk assessment

Under Australian work health and safety guidance, “plant” includes machinery, equipment, appliances, containers, tools and components.   • dry dust, liquid, grease, fibres, metal particles, solder fumes, chemical vapour or biological contamination

  • whether the material is hazardous, combustible or infectious

Do not collect asbestos, combustible dust, hot ash, flammable liquids, solvents or hazardous powders with a general-purpose vacuum merely because it has a wet or dry mode. The risk assessment may require a specialised vacuum class, extraction system, hazardous-area equipment, respiratory protection or licensed removal.

Compare machine capacity and workflow

For floor scrubbers, compare working width, brush or pad type, solution and recovery tank capacities, turning space, squeegee width, battery runtime, charge time, ramp limit and transport weight. A larger working width can reduce passes but may not fit aisles, lifts, doors or storage.

For fume extractors, airflow alone is not enough. Check capture distance, hood or nozzle design, filter stages, contaminant compatibility, replacement-filter cost, alarm or pressure indication, noise and whether exhaust returns to the room. Local exhaust should capture contaminants near the source and must not be treated as a substitute for controlling the process itself.

Chemicals and safety data sheets

If a business uses hazardous chemicals, Safe Work Australia states that current safety data sheets, correct labels, suitable storage, worker information and a hazardous-chemical register may be required. Obtain the SDS before use and confirm that the chemical is compatible with the machine, seals, surface and wastewater method. External box dimensions describe transport space; internal dimensions determine whether the product fits. Measure the item at its widest, longest and highest points, including retail packaging. Add only the clearance needed for cushioning and packing method. Excess empty volume can increase movement, material use and freight cost.

Design for the complete distribution journey

Consider drops, vibration, compression, puncture, moisture, heat, cold, stacking, tampering and return shipping. A satchel may suit soft goods but not a fragile item with sharp corners. A display box may present a product well but still need a separate shipping carton.

Physical weight versus cubic weight

Australia Post states that many domestic business parcels using other packaging are charged by the greater of actual weight or cubic weight, subject to service limits. Measure the sealed parcel, including bulges and protrusions, and calculate cost before committing to a box size. Dangerous and restricted goods

Perfume, nail products, aerosols, paints, batteries and other common commercial goods can be dangerous or restricted in transport. Australia Post accepts only certain dangerous goods under defined conditions and notes that exempt dangerous goods cannot be sent internationally through its service. Food packaging

Food Standards Australia New Zealand states that food businesses must use packaging fit for its intended purpose, unlikely to contaminate food and handled to prevent contamination. Check direct or indirect food contact, oily or acidic food, temperature, freezing, microwave or dishwasher use, storage duration, recycled content and reuse instructions. Choosing packaging tape

Compare backing and adhesive, width, thickness, core size, dispenser compatibility, carton surface, recycled-fibre content, dust, temperature and storage duration. Acrylic, hot-melt and rubber-based adhesives can behave differently in cold stores, hot freight vehicles or on highly recycled cartons. “Fragile” or security printing is a handling message, not additional cushioning or tamper evidence unless the complete tape system is designed for it.

Retail equipment, worktables and display fixtures

Queue barriers, fencing and public access

Retractable belts and velvet-rope stanchions can organise queues inside a venue, but they are not automatically traffic-control devices, fall protection or security fencing. Identify the hazard and the authority required.

  • Use a base and spacing suitable for the belt or rope length.
  • Account for wind, slope, crowds and people leaning on the barrier.
  • Provide visual contrast and avoid belt heights or feet that create trip hazards.
  • Preserve emergency egress, accessible circulation and fire-service access.
  • Do not use decorative queue barriers to control vehicles or road traffic.

Work-zone traffic control requires a planned system, approved devices and competent or authorised people under state and territory road and WHS requirements. Electric-fence energisers, insulators and fencing components have their own installation, warning, earthing and property requirements; they should not be treated as ordinary crowd barriers.

Office supplies and administrative equipment

For whiteboards and wall-mounted products, check wall construction, fasteners, total weight and cable or services behind the wall. For shredders, compare paper width, sheet capacity under real paper conditions, cut type, security requirement, continuous run time, cool-down, bin size, staples or cards, jam reversal and oiling. Brewing, dispensing and distillation equipment

Fermentation and dispensing

Check vessel material, working volume, pressure rating, temperature range, seals, valves, gas compatibility, cleaning access and replacement parts. A 30-litre vessel may not have 30 litres of practical fermentation headspace. Pressure-capable fermenters, kegs and regulators require the exact rated components and pressure-relief system.

Kegerators need adequate ventilation, Australian electrical suitability and compatible keg, coupler, gas bottle, regulator, line and tap components. Gas cylinders must be secured and handled according to supplier and workplace requirements.

Alcohol manufacture and still controls

Brewing and distilling are not legally interchangeable. The ATO states that before manufacturing excisable alcohol products such as spirits or commercial beer, a manufacturer licence is required. Non-commercial home-brewed beer can be excluded from excise when made with non-commercial facilities and without distilled spirit, but commercial manufacture is different.

ATO controls also apply to stills. A person who is not a licensed excise manufacturer needs ATO permission to make, move, set up, buy, sell, import or possess a still with capacity over five litres, regardless of intended use. A still of five litres or less is also controlled when used to distil alcohol. Check the current ATO distillation guidance before purchasing or operating equipment.

Distillation involves heat, flammable vapour, pressure and concentrated product. Use only equipment designed for the lawful process, preserve atmospheric venting and pressure-relief paths, ensure ventilation and ignition control, and obtain competent technical and regulatory advice. A product title mentioning water, essential oils, laboratory use or alcohol does not determine the lawful use.

Pharmaceutical, laboratory and clinic-style supplies

Tattoo and skin-penetration supplies

Separate non-invasive decorative products from equipment used to penetrate skin. Professional tattooing and other skin-penetration procedures are regulated by state or territory public-health laws and often local councils.

NSW Health states that skin-penetration businesses must be registered with the local council, use infection-control practices, ensure skin-penetrating articles are sterile and dispose of needles in an appropriate sharps container. Reusable instruments that penetrate skin must be cleaned and sterilised using the required steam-under-pressure process; difficult-to-clean items should be single-use.   • Do not reuse an item labelled single-use.
  • Use approved sharps containers and clinical-waste arrangements.
  • Design the premises for clean and contaminated workflows, handwashing and easily cleaned surfaces.
  • Use inks, antiseptics, PPE and disinfectants that meet applicable Australian requirements.
  • Keep batch, client, sterilisation and maintenance records required by local law.

Buying a tattoo machine, needle cartridge or microblading tool does not make an untrained home procedure safe or lawful.

Ownership cost, maintenance and business continuity

Compare total cost over the expected workload:

  • filters, brushes, pads, blades, bags, labels, tape, pouches, liners, cartridges and cleaning chemicals
  • batteries, chargers, gas, water and electricity
  • calibration, inspection, test, sterilisation or certification
  • operator training and PPE
  • spare parts, service network and repair turnaround
  • storage, delivery, installation and disposal
  • downtime and whether a backup process is required

A lower purchase price can be poor value when consumables are proprietary, filters are unavailable or the machine cannot be serviced locally. Ask for parts diagrams, service intervals and replacement-item codes before buying critical equipment.

  2. Check product duty rating, capacity and operating limits.
