Check capability separately from connector shape

USB-C ports and cables can support different charging, data and video capabilities. A charger, device and cable all need the required protocol and power rating. Monitors and docks also depend on host display support and available bandwidth. Record the exact models and read the specifications for each function rather than assuming that matching plugs prove compatibility.

Treat security support as a product specification

Can I use a charger with a higher maximum wattage than my device requires?
A properly compliant USB Power Delivery device and charger negotiate an available power profile, so a higher maximum rating does not normally force the full wattage into a lower-power device. However, compatibility still depends on the protocol, voltage profiles, cable, charger quality and device instructions. Do not use an improvised adapter, damaged product or charger with the wrong fixed output or polarity. Which cable markings matter when charging a laptop through USB-C?

Why does a new hard drive or flash drive show less storage than the advertised capacity?

Is copying important files to one external hard drive enough to count as a backup?
It is a backup only when another usable copy remains and the files can be restored. Moving the sole copy to an external drive merely changes its storage location. Drives can fail, be stolen or be affected by fire, ransomware or accidental deletion.
