Record the exact device identity

Before buying an accessory, record the manufacturer, full model number, generation, operating system and available ports. Product families can reuse similar names while changing dimensions, charging protocols, connectors, cameras, keyboards or software support. For a laptop, tablet or phone, the model number in the settings or on the compliance label is more reliable than a visual comparison.

Check whether compatibility is hardware-only or also requires an app, driver, account, subscription or supported operating-system version. An accessory can physically connect but lose important functions after a software update or when the manufacturer ends support.

USB-C, charging power and cables

USB-C describes a connector, not one capability

A USB-C port can support different combinations of charging, USB data, video output, docking and alternate modes. Some ports charge only; some transfer data at USB 2.0 speed; others support high-speed USB, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt or USB4. Check the host device and accessory specifications rather than the connector shape.

Match charger, device and cable

A compliant USB Power Delivery system negotiates an available voltage and current between the source and device. A charger with a higher maximum wattage does not force that maximum into a correctly designed lower-power device, but fast charging still requires a compatible charger protocol, device and cable. Proprietary fast-charging systems may fall back to a slower rate when one component differs.

For USB-C to USB-C cables, USB-IF requires certified cable categories to display 60 W or 240 W power capability markings and, except for USB 2.0-only cables, the supported data rate. USB Power Delivery can support up to 240 W with the appropriate device, charger and full-featured cable; this does not mean every USB-C product supports that level.

  • Check the device’s required input profiles and maximum power.
  • Check the charger’s output per port and how output changes when multiple ports are used.
  • Use a cable rated for the required power and data or video task.
  • Do not use damaged, loose, overheating or unmarked high-power cables.
  • Confirm whether a dock needs its own power supply and how much power reaches the laptop after the dock’s own use.

Australian electrical compliance and power products

Household electrical equipment sold in participating Australian jurisdictions can fall under the Electrical Equipment Safety System. Registered responsible suppliers must meet the applicable safety requirements, and in-scope equipment is marked with the Regulatory Compliance Mark. Power supplies and chargers can be higher-risk regulated equipment even when the phone or other extra-low-voltage device is not itself in scope.   • check the total current or wattage rating and individual outlet controls
  • do not connect power boards together or use damaged sockets and cords
  • keep ventilation openings clear and equipment away from moisture
  • use surge protection only as described; it does not make an unsafe electrical installation safe
  • arrange a licensed electrician for damaged outlets, fixed wiring or repeated tripping

Batteries and power banks

Capacity in milliamp-hours is meaningful only with the battery voltage and conversion losses. A 10,000 mAh power bank will not normally deliver the same number of milliamp-hours at a phone’s charging voltage because energy is converted and some is lost. Compare rated energy in watt-hours where available, output protocols, simultaneous-port behaviour, recharge input, size, weight and permitted airline carriage.

The ACCC warns that lithium-ion batteries and power banks can catch fire, explode or vent toxic gas when defective, damaged, incorrectly charged or disposed of improperly. Use the supplied or manufacturer-approved charger and cable, charge on a non-flammable surface, keep products out of parked vehicles and stop using anything that swells, leaks, overheats, smokes or has a damaged casing. Products using button or coin batteries need a secure child-resistant compartment where the mandatory standard applies. Treat loose or accessible batteries as an urgent hazard around children.

Storage devices, memory cards and backups

Capacity shown by the operating system

Storage manufacturers commonly describe capacity in decimal units, while some operating systems display binary-based units and reserve space for formatting or system functions. The usable figure can therefore look smaller than the number on the package without indicating a defect. Compare the manufacturer’s stated method and the formatted capacity.

Interface and sustained speed

A fast SSD or memory card is limited by the host port, enclosure, cable, card reader and workload. Headline “up to” speed may describe a short sequential test rather than sustained transfer of many small files. For external drives, check USB or Thunderbolt generation, power needs, thermal behaviour, shock resistance and whether the device supports the required file system.

Memory-card markings

For cameras and recorders, match the card format, maximum supported capacity and speed class required by the host. The SD Association explains that Speed Class, UHS Speed Class, Video Speed Class and SD Express Speed Class symbols represent minimum sequential write performance under defined conditions. One external drive is not automatically a resilient backup

A backup is a separate recoverable copy. If the only copy of a file is moved to an external drive, that drive is storage rather than backup. Australian Cyber Security Centre guidance recommends regular backups, testing that files can be restored, disconnecting external backup media when it is not being used and keeping an offline or offsite copy where appropriate. Processor family names can span several generations and power classes. Compare the full processor model, not only “i5”, “Ryzen 7” or a core count. Check whether memory or storage is soldered, replaceable or expandable, and whether the operating system will receive security updates for the intended ownership period.

Monitors and video connections

Compare native resolution, physical size, pixel density, refresh rate, variable-refresh support, colour coverage, brightness, stand adjustment, VESA mount, speakers and ports. The computer and cable must support the selected resolution and refresh rate simultaneously. A dock or adapter can reduce available bandwidth when it shares data, displays and charging across one host connection.

Networking, routers and mesh systems

Router speed is not the same as internet speed

A router’s combined wireless class is an aggregate laboratory link figure across bands and does not describe the speed one device will receive. Actual internet performance is limited by the internet plan, NBN or other access technology, modem or ONT, router WAN port, Wi-Fi environment, client device, distance, walls and network congestion.

Choose coverage and backhaul deliberately

For a small home, one well-positioned router may outperform a poorly placed mesh system. Mesh can help larger or multi-storey homes, but each node needs a strong link to the main unit. A wired Ethernet backhaul can preserve more wireless capacity; wireless backhaul shares radio resources and is affected by the node placement.

  • Confirm the router is compatible with the ISP service and required modem or ONT.
  • Check WAN and LAN port speeds, not only the Wi-Fi label.
  • Choose at least WPA2 support; prefer current security features supported by all important devices.
  • Change default administrative credentials and Wi-Fi password.
  • Enable automatic firmware updates where available.
  • Check the published end-of-support date and replace end-of-life routers.
  • Consider a guest or isolated network for untrusted smart devices.

Security cameras, video doorbells and smart locks

Security support is now a purchasing specification

Australia’s smart-device security rules apply to relevant consumer devices manufactured after 4 March 2026. Cyber.gov.au states that these devices should have a Statement of Compliance, use a unique password or require the user to define one, and publish the period during which security updates will be provided. Local storage versus cloud service

Local microSD, recorder or network storage can reduce subscription dependence but requires capacity, backup, physical security and maintenance. Cloud storage can provide offsite access and event history but may require an ongoing plan, internet connection and account. Compare retained days, event-only versus continuous recording, download rights, encryption, multi-factor authentication, service availability and what happens when the subscription ends.

Privacy and recording laws

A residential camera operated privately is generally outside the federal Privacy Act, but state or territory surveillance laws, strata by-laws, council rules and criminal laws can still apply. Audio recording is often treated more strictly than video. For organisations covered by the Privacy Act, the OAIC states that people generally need to be told before their image is captured and recorded personal information must be secured and destroyed or de-identified when no longer needed. Electronic lock fit and emergency access

Measure door thickness, backset, bore, mortise, latch, edge clearance, handing and the distance from frame and screen door. Confirm fire-door, strata, tenancy and insurance requirements before drilling or replacing hardware. Compare battery type, low-battery warning, mechanical key or external emergency-power method, privacy mode, user logs, offline operation and what happens during an app or service outage. A lock that fits the holes can still be unsuitable for the door’s fire, egress or weather requirements.

Headphones and earphones

Choose among in-ear, over-ear and open or closed designs by comfort, environment and task. Compare wired connection or Bluetooth profiles, microphone quality, multipoint operation, codec support, latency, battery, replacement ear tips or pads and whether active noise cancellation can be used without audio.

Passive isolation comes from the physical seal; active noise cancellation uses microphones and processing to reduce particular ambient sounds. Neither makes loud listening safe. Well-fitting or noise-reducing products can help listeners avoid raising volume in noisy environments.

The World Health Organization advises that listening risk depends on both level and duration; it gives 80 dB for up to 40 hours per week as an example and notes that the safe duration falls sharply as sound level rises. Use device exposure monitoring, volume limits and breaks, and seek professional advice for persistent ringing, muffled hearing or difficulty following conversation. Phone cases, screen protectors, mounts and chargers

Use the exact phone model and generation. Check case dimensions, camera bump, button and port cut-outs, screen edge, stylus, magnetic ring or wireless-charging coil alignment and whether the case must be removed for a dock, lens or controller.

A magnetic case or ring does not automatically support every magnetic charging or accessory ecosystem. Thick materials, metal plates, wallets and misaligned rings can reduce wireless-charging performance or create heat. Follow the phone and charger instructions.

For a vehicle mount, check the dashboard, windscreen, vent or headrest location, phone weight, case thickness, adhesive temperature range, driver vision, airbag deployment area and cable routing. State and territory road rules govern mounting and touching a phone while driving. Install and configure the mount while parked and use only functions permitted for the driver and licence type.

Printers, scanners, labels and consumables

Choose from the real monthly workload

Compare colour or monochrome, inkjet or laser, print and scan size, automatic duplex, document feeder, borderless printing, photo needs, network support, mobile printing, paper capacity, duty cycle, maintenance and physical footprint. A low printer price can be poor value when the required cartridge or label stock is expensive or unavailable.

Match the exact consumable code

Use the full printer model, region and cartridge, toner, drum, maintenance box, label or ribbon code. Products with similar numbers can use different chips, colours, yields or physical keys. Firmware updates can also affect third-party consumables; review the printer manufacturer’s support information and consumer rights.

Read page yield as a comparison test

ISO page-yield figures are produced under controlled test patterns and continuous default-mode printing. Actual yield changes with page coverage, photos, quality settings, cleaning cycles, temperature, humidity and infrequent use. Epson’s Australian explanation notes that ink is also used during setup and maintenance and that all colours can be consumed during monochrome printing. Metal detectors and home weather stations

For metal detectors, compare intended target, frequency or multi-frequency operation, coil type and size, ground balance, water rating, weight and headphone connection. Permission to detect or remove items depends on land ownership, parks, heritage, mining and fossicking laws. NSW National Parks, for example, generally prohibits fossicking without consent and protects Aboriginal, historic and fossil material. Check the land manager and current jurisdictional rules before use.

For weather stations, compare sensor types, wireless range, logging, app or cloud dependence, replaceable batteries, calibration and mounting hardware. Sensor placement can dominate accuracy: the Bureau of Meteorology notes that rain gauges near buildings, solid fences and trees can have serious errors and recommends distance from obstructions. A consumer station can track local conditions but should not replace official warnings or calibrated observations.

Disposal, data removal and recalls

Before selling, returning or recycling a connected device, back up required information, sign out, remove accounts and memory cards, disable tracking where appropriate and perform the manufacturer’s secure reset. For a failed storage drive containing sensitive data, use an appropriate data-destruction process rather than assuming deletion or formatting is sufficient.
