Plan the complete system before choosing one component

Write down the source device, every connection and the final output. A speaker, projector, microphone or recorder can be suitable on its own but still fail to work with the rest of the setup. Check the exact ports and supported functions rather than relying on connector shape. Bluetooth devices need compatible profiles; USB-C ports can differ in video, data and charging capability; and an HDMI cable must support the resolution, refresh rate and audio feature required by both connected devices.

Measure the operating setup, not only the product

For speakers, account for stands, listening distance, power and clear airflow. For projectors, measure lens-to-screen distance, visible image width, projector ventilation and the complete screen or stand. For instruments, include the player, stool, pedals, stands and safe cable routes. Camera bags and mounts should be checked by internal dimensions, thread, plate and load rating rather than a broad compatibility claim.

Check Australian electrical and wireless suitability

Confirm the Australian plug, voltage, supplied power adapter and appropriate compliance information for regulated electrical or wireless products. Wireless microphones require particular care because authorised frequencies vary by band and location. What is the difference between powered and passive speakers?
Powered, or active, speakers contain amplification and normally need mains power or a battery plus a compatible audio source. Passive speakers need a separate amplifier or receiver. With passive speakers, amplifier output, speaker impedance and power handling must be checked as one system. A powered speaker can simplify a desk, portable PA or turntable setup, but it may still need the correct cable, preamplifier or mixer. Read the individual product specification rather than assuming every powered speaker accepts every source.
Does a higher speaker wattage mean the speaker will sound louder?
Not by itself. A watt figure can describe amplifier output, electrical input or speaker power handling, and listings may use continuous, programme or peak values. Perceived loudness also depends on speaker sensitivity, maximum sound-pressure level, room placement, listening distance and distortion. Compare figures measured using the same method and consider the intended space. A lower-wattage efficient speaker can sound louder than a higher-wattage product measured or designed differently.
Can any Bluetooth speaker connect to any phone, laptop or projector?
No. The devices need compatible Bluetooth profiles for the intended function, and some products support audio receiving but not audio transmitting. A projector may accept Bluetooth control while lacking Bluetooth audio output, or a speaker may pair for music but not microphone use. Check the source and speaker manuals for supported profiles, codecs, pairing limits and operating-system requirements. The Bluetooth version number alone does not prove that a specific feature will work.
Why can Bluetooth audio be out of sync with video or musical performance?
Bluetooth audio is encoded, transmitted, buffered and decoded, which introduces latency. The delay varies with the source, receiving device, codec, app and signal conditions. It may be acceptable for casual music but noticeable with lip-sync, gaming, live monitoring or electronic instruments. Look for a stated low-latency mode and confirm that both devices support the same feature. For timing-critical work, a suitable wired connection is generally more predictable.
Does an HDMI or USB-C connector guarantee every audio and video feature?
No. HDMI feature support depends on the ports, devices, cable category and required bandwidth. USB-C describes the connector shape but does not guarantee identical data speed, video output, charging power or USB Power Delivery. Check the exact source-device and destination-device specifications, then choose a cable certified or rated for the required feature. An adapter cannot create a video output or charging protocol that the host device does not support.

What is the difference between native and supported projector resolution?
Native resolution is the projector's own display resolution. Supported resolution describes signals the projector can accept. A product advertised as supporting 4K may accept a 4K input and scale it to a lower native panel resolution. For image detail, compare the native resolution, accepted formats and the content source. Also check native aspect ratio because scaling a different shape can create borders or reduce usable pixels.
How do I work out whether a projector can create the screen size I want?
Measure the proposed image width and the available distance from the projector lens to the screen. Throw ratio is approximately throw distance divided by image width, but zoom range, lens position, offset and mounting can change the exact result. Use the manufacturer's distance calculator or installation table for the model. Include the projector body, ventilation clearances, ceiling or stand location and the complete screen casing in the room plan.
How should I compare projector brightness claims?
Compare figures stated using the same recognised measurement, such as ANSI lumens or clearly declared colour and white light output. Avoid treating an unexplained LED-lumen or marketing figure as directly equivalent. Required brightness increases with ambient light and larger image size, while a dark room permits lower output. Also compare contrast, screen material and viewing conditions. A bright projector cannot fully overcome direct sunlight on the screen.
Does the projector screen need to match the projector's aspect ratio?
Matching the screen to the projector's native aspect ratio and main content usually uses the surface most efficiently. A 16:9 screen suits common home video, while some presentation systems use 16:10 or 4:3. A different ratio can still work but may leave unused borders. Check the screen's visible image dimensions, not only its diagonal size, and confirm that the wall, stand or ceiling can safely accommodate the complete product.
Do projectors need separate speakers?
Many projectors include a small speaker, but output, bass, placement and volume can be limited.
