Separate exercise readiness from equipment selection
Equipment can support activity, but it does not determine whether a particular exercise is appropriate for an individual. A person returning after illness, surgery, injury or a long inactive period, or managing symptoms or a diagnosed condition, may need advice from a doctor, physiotherapist, accredited exercise physiologist or another suitable health professional before starting or progressing a program.
Use a recognised pre-exercise screening process where relevant, especially in a gym or coached setting. Stop exercise and seek appropriate help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, sudden neurological symptoms or an acute injury. Measure the operating zone, not only the machine footprint

Check floor structure and surface protection separately
A rubber mat can reduce vibration, movement, sweat damage and some noise, but it does not increase the structural capacity of the floor. Heavy racks, weight stacks and free weights can create concentrated and impact loads. Upper floors, balconies, raised timber floors and rental properties may require structural or property advice before heavy equipment is installed.
Check the equipment’s total mass plus user and loaded weight. For free weights, also consider accidental drops. Use a level surface and the manufacturer’s levelling feet or shims only as instructed. Do not place powered equipment on a deep soft surface that blocks vents or makes the frame unstable.
Treadmills and walking pads
Compare the walking or running belt’s usable length and width, speed range, motor duty information, incline, user load, handrails, emergency stop, deck cushioning, folded dimensions and transport wheels. A tall runner, long stride or fast pace can require a larger running surface than casual walking.

Walking while working
An under-desk walking pad must still provide enough belt width, stable speed control and a safe stop method. Typing, reading and screen use can reduce attention and change posture. Begin slowly, keep cables and chair legs clear and stop walking for tasks requiring fine control or sustained concentration. A walking pad without a full handrail is not automatically suitable for a person with balance or mobility concerns.
Exercise bikes and indoor cycles
Australia’s exercise-cycle mandatory standard addresses hazardous moving parts, entrapment, seat-support failure and user instructions. Check user height or inseam range, maximum user load, seat fore-aft and height adjustment, handlebar reach, pedal type, flywheel or resistance system, step-through access, footprint and transport wheels. The lowest seat position can still be too high for a short rider, while a tall rider can overextend the seat post beyond its permitted mark.
Adjust the seat so the knee remains slightly bent at the bottom of the pedal stroke without the hips rocking. Keep children away from flywheels, cranks, chains and pedals and confirm every guard is fitted. Spin bikes and air bikes can have high-inertia moving parts that continue after the rider stops applying force.
Free weights, benches, racks and machines
Identify the load rating for every component: bench, rack, bar, plate storage, cable, pulley, attachment and spotter arm. A rack’s headline capacity does not prove that its J-hooks, safeties, bench or floor can carry the same load. Check upright spacing, hole diameter and spacing, internal width, bar length, sleeve diameter and plate bore before mixing brands.
For a bench, compare back-pad positions, seat adjustment, pad dimensions, footprint, stability and the combined user-plus-weight limit. For dumbbells and barbells, check handle diameter, knurling, collar or lock type and whether the stated weight is per item or per pair.
Set safety arms or straps just below the lowest controlled position and use a competent spotter for lifts that require one. Do not train under a loaded bar without appropriate safeties. Keep collars secured where required, store plates low and inspect cables, pulleys, welds, bolts and upholstery regularly.
Anchoring and tipping
Some power racks, pull-up stations, cable machines and wall-mounted systems must be bolted to a suitable floor or wall. Follow the exact anchoring instructions and use fixings suited to the substrate. A heavy base or plate storage can improve stability but is not a substitute for required anchoring. Do not perform kipping, banded or suspension movements on a frame unless the manufacturer permits the direction and dynamic load.
Resistance bands, suspension trainers and portable accessories
Check band material, length, resistance range, attachment method and condition. Resistance labels are often approximate and can vary through the movement. Inspect for cuts, whitening, cracks, sticky surfaces or damaged handles and replace deteriorated bands before they snap.
Door anchors must be installed on the correct side of a solid, closed door and away from a person who could open it. Wall or ceiling anchors need structural support and correct fixing. Never attach a band or suspension trainer to furniture, a railing or an unknown fitting merely because it feels solid under a light pull.
Yoga, Pilates, mats and balance products
Compare mat length, width, thickness, density, surface grip and the floor on which it will be used. A thicker mat can improve cushioning but reduce stability for standing balance, while a thin mat may not protect knees on a hard floor. Clean and dry it according to the material instructions because sweat, dust and detergent residue can change grip.
For blocks, rings, rollers, balls and balance trainers, check user load, dimensions, inflation pressure and intended exercise. A yoga block is not a step, and a foam roller is not designed as a load-bearing bench. Use sufficient clear floor space and support when learning balance work.

Bicycle helmets: standard, activity and fit
The bicycle-helmet mandatory standard sets design, performance, testing and marking requirements and currently permits compliance with one of several listed standards. A helmet should sit level, low enough to protect the forehead, snug without pressure points and secure with the straps buckled. It should not tilt or move side to side. Choose the helmet for the activity; a bicycle helmet is not automatically suitable for motorsport or specialised downhill competition.
Replace a helmet after a significant impact even when damage is not obvious, and replace it when the shell, liner, straps or buckle are damaged or the manufacturer’s service life has expired. Children should remove helmets when not riding because a caught strap can create a strangulation hazard on playground equipment or while climbing.
E-bikes, e-scooters and hoverboards
Public-use legality depends on the jurisdiction and the device’s design and capability, not only the speed selected by the rider. Check the rules where it will be used before purchase. For example, current Victorian rules define a legal e-scooter by features including a maximum capability of 25 km/h on level ground and restrict public riding to users aged 16 or older, with a 20 km/h riding limit and specified paths or roads. Other jurisdictions differ.
For e-bikes, check working pedals, motor power, assistance behaviour and cut-off speed. Current Victorian guidance permits common EPACs with up to 250 watts continuous rated power, pedal assistance and cut-off at 25 km/h, while other designs or jurisdictions can use different legal categories. A high-power product can be an unregistered motor vehicle rather than a bicycle.
Hoverboard and self-balancing-device rules also vary and many are restricted to private property. Check the local transport authority and do not assume that a product sold online is legal on footpaths, roads or shared paths.
Lithium-battery and charger safety
Use only the supplied charger or a certified compatible replacement that matches the battery specifications. Charge on a hard, non-combustible surface in a ventilated area, away from exits and combustible materials. Do not charge while sleeping or leave the device unattended, and disconnect it when fully charged according to the instructions.
Stop using a battery or charger that is swollen, leaking, cracked, mechanically damaged, unusually hot or producing an odour or noise. Do not modify, bypass limits or combine mismatched cells, batteries, controllers or chargers. Australia’s mandatory standard applies to domestic basketball rings, backboards and portable systems. Do not install a ring or backboard on brickwork. For portable systems, fill or ballast the base exactly as instructed, lower or secure it for strong wind and move it only by the approved method. Check pole, backboard, rim, fasteners and base for movement, cracking, corrosion or water loss.
Soccer goals, nets and ball equipment
Match the goal size and construction to the age, ball and intended training or competition. Secure portable goals by the manufacturer’s anchoring method and never allow climbing, hanging or swinging on the frame or net. Remove or store lightweight goals when not in use or when wind could move them.
Check net mesh and attachment for head, finger and limb entrapment, especially around children. Place goals away from roads, glass, pools and hard obstacles. Ball size, inflation and pressure should follow the sport and age guidance; overinflation changes handling and can damage seams or valves.

Regularly inspect the mat, springs, frame, leg braces, padding, net, zipper and anchors. Sunlight can weaken nets and pads before damage is obvious.
Only one child should jump at a time and a responsible adult should supervise. Begin with basic controlled bouncing in the centre. Do not allow users underneath while someone is jumping, and do not add water, balls, boards or improvised equipment unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.
Replacement mats, nets, springs, poles and pads must match the exact brand, model, frame dimensions, spring length and attachment pattern. A similar diameter does not prove compatibility.
Racquet sports, table tennis and pickleball
For racquets and paddles, compare the user’s level, grip size, total weight, balance, head or face size, length and material. A junior racquet should be selected by the child’s height, strength and technique rather than age alone. Grip that is too large or small can reduce control and comfort.
For table-tennis tables and portable nets, confirm playing dimensions, folded size, wheel locks, surface thickness, room clearance and net-post compatibility.
