Quick answer: Use adjustable layers that suit the sleeper and bedroom: a compatible mattress protector, sheets, one or more blankets and a correctly chosen quilt. There is no universal rule that every blanket must sit beneath the quilt. Arrange layers for comfort without excessive weight, overheating or interference with an electric blanket.
Build from the mattress upward
- Mattress protector: choose the correct depth and check compatibility with electric blankets, adjustable beds and toppers.
- Topper or underlay: use only where it suits the mattress, sleeper and electric-blanket instructions.
- Sheets: compare fibre, weave, feel, washing and pocket depth rather than assuming one winter fabric suits everyone.
- Blanket: use a removable warmth layer that can be adjusted during the night.
- Quilt or doona: choose from the room temperature, fill, warmth rating, weight and care needs.
- Optional throw: keep decorative layers light, secure and away from heaters.
Use the quilt and doona guide to compare warmth information without relying on a universal GSM chart.
Does the blanket go above or below the quilt?
Either can work. A blanket beneath the quilt may feel more directly warm, while a light blanket above can be easier to remove. Heavy layers on top can compress loft or create uncomfortable weight. Follow the quilt and electric-blanket instructions, and choose the arrangement that remains breathable and easy to adjust.
Electric-blanket safety
The ACCC’s June 2026 winter guidance says to inspect electric blankets before use, discard damaged products and warm the bed before turning the blanket off rather than sleeping with it operating.
- Inspect for frayed fabric, exposed elements, damaged cords, scorch marks or discolouration.
- Follow the fitting instructions and keep controls and connectors in the correct position.
- Do not fold, bunch or crease the operating blanket.
- Do not place heavy items on the bed while it is on.
- Do not combine it with an incompatible topper, underlay or adjustable bed.
- Switch it off before sleep in line with current ACCC advice.
- Seek advice before use during pregnancy or with diabetes, reduced sensation or another relevant health condition.
Wheat and heat packs
Do not use a wheat pack as a bed warmer or place it in or under bedding. The ACCC warns that bedding traps heat and can cause ignition. Follow the heating instructions, allow the pack to cool completely before reheating and dispose of it if it smells burned or shows charring.
Hot water bottles
Use only a sound product with a secure stopper and follow its filling and replacement instructions. Avoid boiling water, overfilling, direct skin contact and use with people who cannot reliably sense or move away from heat. Do not treat a hot water bottle as a child’s bed warmer without current safety guidance.
Adjust warmth safely
- Keep layers light enough for the sleeper to move and remove them.
- Use age-appropriate bedding for infants and children and follow safe-sleep advice.
- Avoid loose bedding near a portable heater.
- Keep the bed and curtains outside all heater clearances.
- Ventilate the room appropriately and address condensation.
- Discuss persistent night sweats, cold intolerance or sleep problems with a health professional.
Care checklist
- Wash each item according to its care label.
- Dry completely before remaking or storing the bed.
- Check fitted-sheet and protector depth after adding a topper.
- Inspect cords and warming products at the start of each winter.
- Check the Australian recalls database.
- Store electric blankets rolled or flat as instructed, not sharply folded.

Frequently asked questions
Should a blanket go under or over the doona?
Either can work. Avoid excessive weight and follow any electric-blanket or quilt instructions. Choose the arrangement that is comfortable and easy to adjust.
Can I sleep with an electric blanket on?
Current ACCC guidance says to warm the bed and then turn the electric blanket off rather than sleeping with it operating.
Can I put a wheat pack in the bed?
No. The ACCC advises not to place heated wheat packs in or under bedding because trapped heat can cause ignition.
Are heavier layers always warmer?
No. Warmth depends on material, loft, construction and room conditions. Excessive weight can reduce comfort and compress loft.
When should an electric blanket be replaced?
Discard it when fabric, wiring, controls or cords are damaged, scorched or worn, and follow the manufacturer’s service-life advice.
